10 . 13 . 2011 ::: a bird
Oh, God:
Take this out of my hands;
let me just bear it forth and give it to you:
this mystery
and all of its context that I will never understand.
I don’t understand.
Do You give us any privacy at all,
or do you oversee everything?
Does your vision push past the walls of this flesh
and watch the multiplying cells unmystified as
only You could be?
What is happening to me?
What happened to me?
How did you make a heart that could bear these things?
I have been a rock the water washes over
impotent to manage my changing form
powerless to stop a love
that moves with the force of nature
I have been
OH,
you should see shorty from the BACK.
shorty has been up since five-thirty.
shorty went to bed at three,
falling asleep after
not being able to put it down,
that book she was aching to
to to to to read.
SHORTY came to cover my classes
shorty is my eye candy
look at that ass.
shorty is a runner
just for me
just for fun
Shorty is dumb but
BUT DAMN.
shorty didn’t sleep last night.
shorty won’t sleep tonight.
shorty has glasses but
shorty’s the sub for the class but,
shorties never fight.
shorty’s gonna bite,
i’mma pass the note to my right
tell all my homies
“i would fuck the sub”
shorty’s ass is tight.
it happens
like the fall of a quiet snow
in the perfect, coldest winter:
flakes drifting aimlessly
and settling in calm
loving the freeze
the thaw
the moments of melting
and the new leaves that open
and mystify eyes
as we pass upward.
…to air your grievance:
It bothers me that books are not as readily available to children in some communities as they are in others. In lieu of Christmas gifts this year, I ask that anyone who sees this make a small donation to FirstBook. They’ll match every donation that’s made from now until December 31st. Of everything I’m fortunate to have this holiday season, happiness of heart and mind is my favorite; I’m so thankful books are what they are to me.
11 . 22 . 2010 ::: Letter
thank you for turning a blind eye to all my errors, typographical, orthographical, and grammatical. i am glad you enjoy my first drafts so much, and congratulations on single-handedly dismantling and incinerating my editing process. i am proud to say that earning an ‘A’ at the rate of 1 page per every 15 minutes has led me to feel basically infallible. perhaps i should put teaching on the shelf for a while and consider writing new religious doctrine.
cordially yours,
n
I’ll never say a prayer again.
It has no bearing over whom, and where, and when;
the Lord’s will never bends.
I will waste away wondering why
we are borne forth to face mysterious intents.
10 . 28 . 2010 ::: a bird
how
little we know
the difference
between
love and
the allure of permanence
It’s fall, and it’s finally cooling, way, way down here in Albuquerque. This is my survival kit:
Loves, Readers, Strangers: if you have any suggestions, I’ll lend you my ears.
10 . 19 . 2010 ::: favorite thing
eating bowl of vanilla almond special k: unparalleled delight.
